The Power of the Word “Only” In Sales Copy

How to Go From Having Customers Balking at Your Price to Being Ready to Buy….

It’s only a short read!

The words you use to describe your pricing can make a big difference to your sales. Something as small as just putting the word “only” before your pricing can increase your sales. The power of the word “only” in sales copy is down to human nature in how we frame things.

How items are described and the words we use to picture situations have a big impact on how we then think about a scenario. If you think about your child saying “I cut my hand, but there’s only a little blood” versus, “I cut my hand and there’s blood everywhere,” it paints two very different pictures in your mind.

When someone asks you to complete a survey and gets a refusal, they will often then say “it will only take 5 minutes”.  I’ve fallen for this more than once!

How power words relate to marketing

Let’s think about how this relates to marketing. If your price point is $97, change your sales copy to read “Only $97.”  By putting “only” in front of the price, you are re-framing the price, and implying that it isn’t that big, and is good value. Psychologically, your customers are programmed to think they are getting a good deal.

We looked in a previous article on tips to increase conversions at why ending your prices with a 7 improves your sales.

While it may seem insignificant, little tweaks like this can have a big impact on conversions. How you frame your offer and train your customers to think about your pricing can greatly influence their buying decision. By using the word “only” before your price (eg, “Only $97” vs. “$97”) you psychologically imply the value they are getting is greater than the amount they are paying.
